National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) offers an exhilarating, activity-filled program aimed at empowering youth members with essential leadership skills applicable both within their home troops and in various leadership scenarios.
The NYLT curriculum revolves around the three core aspects of effective leadership: what a leader must BE, what he must KNOW, and what he must DO. These fundamental principles are thoroughly imparted with a strong emphasis on practical application. Throughout the course, participants embark on a Quest for the Meaning of Leadership, bringing these skills to life.
Spanning six days, NYLT immerses participants in outdoor troop and patrol settings, ensuring a dynamic learning experience with immediate real-world applications. Concepts are introduced early on, reinforced, and facilitated through mnemonic aids, enabling rapid comprehension and utilization of leadership skills.
NYLT seamlessly integrates contemporary leadership theories with the time-tested traditions of Scouting. Through a blend of activities, presentations, challenges, and discussions supported by multimedia resources, participants are equipped with a cohesive leadership framework that instills confidence and proficiency.
To qualify for NYLT, participants must meet certain criteria:
- Be a registered member of a Scouting unit.
- Possess a current BSA Health and Medical Record (Parts A, B, and C).
- For Scout BSA members, aged 13 and above as of March 1, 2020, completion of Introduction to Leadership Skills for Troops (ILST) is required.
- Venturers and Sea Scouts, aged 14 or older, or 13 and have completed eighth grade, must have completed Introduction to Leadership Skills for Crews or Ships, in addition to having at least one year of camping experience.
A unit leader recommendation is also necessary for attendance.
