Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation (BALOO) is a one-and-a-half day course designed as an introduction to the Cub Scout outdoor program for leaders interested in adding a camping component to their Pack activities.

BALOO training consists of an online pre-requisite component in addition to an overnight hands on practical. BSA’s Cub Scout level camping policies will be taught along with the discovery of the necessary tools to help units carry our a successful camping experience. Completion of this course is mandatory for a MINIMUM OF ONE adult on a Pack overnighter.

You will learn about health and safety, GPS, aquatics, gear selection, nature and hiking, campfire planning, outdoor ethics, cooking and sanitation, first aid, practical knife safety for Cub Scouts, campfire selection, large-group games, meal planning, duty to God, flag ceremonies, outdoor ceremonies, stoves, lanterns, fire safety, basic knots, and program planning for Cub Scouts.

Each instructional session is designed to help build confidence and competence in leaders conducting outdoor camping experiences for Cub and Webelos Scouts.  Designed for fun, as well as learning, course participants will be divided into patrols, where they will gain firsthand experience in this traditional Boy Scout technique for teaching teamwork and leadership.  Patrols will camp and prepare meals together, as well as attend training sessions together.
